We started a LEGO robotics program for grades 5th & 6th at Holy Name Catholic School during the Fall 2014. The lessons being taught are STEM lessons. STEM education integrates concepts that are usually taught as separate subjects in different classes and emphasizes the application of knowledge to real-life situations. A lesson or unit in a STEM class is typically based around finding a solution to a real-world problem and tends to emphasize project-based learning.
Why robotics? It develops an interest in math, science and technology and extends reading, writing and presentation skills. It provides a glimpse to future careers. In addition, it allows for thinking through problems and analytical thinking, logical reasoning and critical thinking.
This is a family event. Some of the activities that have been provided are: volleyball, kickball, walking, and riding bicycles. Games will be available for PK – 6th grade. Before the evening is over there will be materials on healthy recipes, nutrition, and physical activity.
